Golf is a major draw-card of Marrakech, offering a choice of three 18 hole, par 72, courses.

Pacha El Glaoui constructed
le Golf Royal de Marrakech in 1924 after becoming a fan of the game during a trip to England. His Majesty Hassan II, Winston Churchill, David Lloyd George and Eisenhower have played here. The fairways are cloaked in olives, cypresses, eucalyptus and cedars and orange trees. The most difficult hole is the 15th known as the Brigitte Bardot after its evocative landscaping. The colonial style clubhouse is decorated in the Moorish manner, with a large terrace opening onto a beautiful panorama.

Opened in 1993, the
Palmeraie Golf Club (pictured above) was designed by internationally renowned Robert Trent Jones, and set in an oasis around seven lakes. It is a championship course, and venue for the LPGA European tour.

The newest of Marrakech’s courses is the
Golf d’Amelki. Created in the desert, it is perhaps the most dramatic. Modelled around several of the khettaras built in the twelfth century to collect rainwater and pipe it to the medina, it is planted with palms and papyrus. In winter the snow-capped Atlas provide a breathtaking backdrop.

Riad Porte Royale can organize a round of golf at any of these courses. Green fees average about 45 euros, and a caddy about 10 euros.
